Our History

The story of the Bay City Cooperative Market began in 2012, when a small group of neighbors first gathered to explore the idea of a community-owned food co-op. Although those early efforts didn’t immediately take root, the vision lived on. By the spring of 2014, new supporters stepped in, holding monthly meetings where attendance varied—some sessions drew a dozen people, others just a few. Yet that dedicated core persevered, ultimately forming a steering committee determined to establish a thriving, locally focused marketplace in Bay City.

In 2015, a critical connection with Delta College led us to the Product Center at Michigan State University. At their request, we conducted an online survey to measure community interest. The response was overwhelming: more than 900 participants shared their support, and a public meeting drew 125 enthusiastic attendees. With this groundswell of encouragement, we knew it was time to move forward.

Throughout that pivotal summer, our steering committee—now seven members strong—took vital steps: incorporating as a Michigan non-profit, adopting bylaws, engaging with local leaders and organizations, opening a credit union account, exploring potential downtown locations, and applying for grants. With each milestone, we laid the foundation for a vibrant, community-owned food co-op that would serve Bay City’s evolving needs.

From these efforts, our membership began to grow steadily. Starting as a modest circle of dedicated individuals, we’ve expanded year after year, overcoming challenges that included navigating a global pandemic. Fast forward to 2024, and the Bay City Cooperative Market has emerged stronger than ever, proudly counting over 250 member-owners who share our vision. While our official incorporation remains Bay City Food Cooperative, a membership survey guided us to operate under the name Bay City Cooperative Market—reflecting a community-driven commitment to fresh, ethically produced, locally sourced foods.

As we look ahead, the Bay City Cooperative Market’s continued success hinges on strengthening our membership even further. Each new owner’s involvement amplifies our impact, enhances our purchasing power, and helps us provide greater variety and value to the community. By joining as a member-owner, you invest directly in local farms, sustainable practices, and a more resilient food economy for all of Bay City. Become part of the next chapter in our co-op’s remarkable journey—join us today and help shape a healthier, more sustainable future.
