Spring is on its way, and we are starting to think about our gardens. Some of you plant from seedlings. But some of you have a real green thumb and start your seedlings from scratch!
The BCCM has a history of partnering with area farmers and with the Jack and Alice Wirt Library to bring you seeds and information on how to start them. This year is no exception.
On Saturday, February 23rd, starting at 11 am, Ben Cohen of Small House Farm is hosting a huge seed swap at Chippewa Nature Center, 400 S. Badour Rd, Midland MI 48640. According to Ben, “As the interest in locally gown food increases, the demand for local seed is not far behind. After all, food is only as local as the seed that grows it.” This is going to be a very fun event with seed swappers from all over the country, workshops, and speakers.
We also have a couple opportunities to help sort seeds. On February 7th and 8th, there will be seed sorting at the Wirt Library. Come join us at 10 am on Friday, February 7th and noon on Saturday, February 8th. The seeds that will be sorted will be placed in the seed library at the Wirt. They are free to any Bay County resident.
If you need assistance starting your seeds, we have you covered. On March 10th at 6 pm at the Wirt Library, Ben will be talking about seed starting. This is an excellent opportunity to for beginners and pros alike. Seed starting can be intimidating, but Ben can show you how to get started.
